 Basic security measures involve protection by well selected passwords, change of file permissions and back up of computers data.

To have maximum Internet protection you need 3 things on your computer:

1) Firewall.A firewall is a software program that has the ability to block any unauthorised ports on the computer.

2) Anti-virus.Programs can be made to help your computer, but some users can also create programs with intentions of destroying the computers data by being deceptive. Such things like this are known as Trojan horses, worms, viruses and malware.

 Software programs such as antivirus software are the most useful in protecting your computer from harmful viruses. These programs are used to detect and eliminate viruses, but unfortunately are not as intellect to eliminate all viruses known!

3) Anti-spyware.These include programs designed to remove or to block spyware, as well as various user practices which reduce the chance of getting spyware on a system. If your system was unprotected properly for sometime and was connected to the internet - there's is a good chance it already has been infected. When a large number of viruses or spyware have infected a Windows computer, the only remedy may involve backing up user data, and fully reinstalling the operating system.

Some protection may be achieved even for free - using free anitivirus (AVG Free for example), antispyware and pre-installed firewall (Windows XP SP2+, Vista). This will give you good protection from majority of viruses and spyware.
